- Australia

Diana Devitt-Dawson is from Tasmania. She trained with Patrick Madconad from 1981-1984.

On graduating Diana became a member of STAT. In 1985 she was invited to teach at the Alexander Institute in central London under directors Dr Wilfred Barlow and Marjory Barlow (Alexander’s niece). While in London Diana had on-going lessons with the Barlows, Margaret Goldie and Elisabeth Walker. On returning home to Melbourne in 1988 Diana met 1st generation teacher, Erika Whitaker, whom she visited weekly for several years.  In 2002 Diana became an AUSTAT Head of Training and set up the Alexander Technique Institute Teacher Training School in Sydney, Australia. Diana’s teaching both her students and pupil has been influence by the 1st generation teachers (mentioned above) who ‘taught to principle’  ie as outlined in Alexander’s books.

Diana’s learning continues as she re-reads Alexander’s books that clarify his methodology and the need for skilled, hands-on work that heighten one’s sensory (kinaesthetic) sense to allow understanding – words alone (knowledge alone) are not IT.  In the light of recent neuroscience research and the findings by Dr Iain McGilchrist concerning the interconnectedness of all things, Diana marvels at Alexander’s wisdom and insight in understanding the body-mind complex and the need (for all ages) for a re-education in the use of the self and of one’s reactivity.  Alexander’s teaching is preventive and rehabilitative for psychophysical, emotional and behavioural health and well-being. It is a teaching that offers freedom from conditioned and or, acquired habits of use by applying the principles of conscious inhibition and conscious direction in daily life. Diana’s background is that of an Emergency/Orthopaedic nurse educator and Midwife. Diana delights in teaching children, young adults and musicians (in particular), harpists. Diana visits London annually and offers private lessons in Bloomsbury.
