David Owen enjoyed a career in industry, medical physics and as an engineer in the BBC. Towards the end of this time he had lessons in the technique for 2 ½ years before training with Jeanne Haahr (Ne Day) (STAT/Carrington) in Totnes, Devon UK, qualifying in 1990.

He realised it was important to have a harmonious mind, in order to not interfere with one’s body and so studied counselling, psychotherapy and came across Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP.)

Through NLP he saw potential for improvement in how the Technique is taught.

  • He found new ways of wording to avoid some counter productive effects.
  • He came up with clearer definitions and explanations of the Technique and of its procedures.
  • And despite Alexander not being keen on relaxation, he could see that many students and even some teachers did not seem relaxed, which impacted their use.
  • He later discovered that he was setting pupils back with negative feedback and found ways to avoid that, give positive reinforcement and thus accelerate people’s learning.

He trained extensively in NLP to Trainer level with Dr Richard Bandler, the originator of NLP, and assisted on many of his and other leading trainers’ trainings. He has taught the technique and used NLP in therapeutic practice and as a trainer since 1990.

An article outlining his approach has been published in ExChange the in-house magazine of Alexander Technique International and can also be seen on his websites: LoosenUp.org and AlexanderTechniquePlymouth.co.uk
