Panel Discussion: Legacy Project – Alexander Technique for Life (FMAT Charity Project)
“The Alexander Technique is a means to an end, not an end in itself”
Please join us for an open and enlightening conversation about First Generation Teachers.
What have we, and perhaps others in the audience, learnt from them that have helped us in our lives?
This panel has come together to recollect the work of some of those wonderful teachers, including Margaret Goldie, Peggy Williams and Erika Whittaker, who did not have their own training schools but over many years shared insightful lessons and friendships.
Experiences of working with these early students of F M Alexander, from his first training course and his last, will be recalled, as well as memories and stories of sharing time and interests with these special people.
We will explore together what these unique individuals were really like, the differences between them and their teaching, as well as what they had in common. What were their vulnerabilities and strengths? How did they give life to the Alexander principles?
The Panellists share their response to the question:
“How has the Alexander work and contact with these teachers impacted your lives?”
“It has enabled me to recognise when I am going in the wrong direction” – Gerda Druks-Kok
“It gave me a glimpse, a taste of a wholeness and unity beyond what I’d imagined possible, from which I could find my way” – Nanette Walsh
“In spending time with these teachers, I learnt how to use it for myself and in my life”- John Hunter
“Thirty years on I am beginning to touch what I experienced with them; I feel it is so alive, relevant and needed” – Jacqui Hindley
If you are curious, please come! The discussion will explore these themes in depth. It is a chance to hear more first-hand stories and also to ask any questions you may have. The panel would be very happy to offer their reflections on any questions the audience brings.
The Legacy Project is a Charity for the F Matthias Alexander Technique initiative seeking to preserve some insights and memories of those who worked with First Generation Teachers.
