Using NLP and positive reinforcement to teach the Alexander Technique
Neuro-Linguistic Programming and behaviourism have both had a bad rap. Like water, air and electricity, they can be misused. They can also be used to great effect for good. Here are some applications of them to the Alexander Technique.
I use NLP and positive reinforcement to teach the technique more clearly, easily and quickly than I would be able to otherwise. Despite my teachers having been like Trappist monks: hardly speaking, I am very vocal and clear about what I want from my pupils, yet without them end-gaining. Avoiding negative feedback, I give precise, gentle positive reinforcement when they achieve my objectives. This way, I am able to rapidly and almost immediately teach them ongoing inhibition. I can get them to soften and free their necks quickly, without them woggling their heads around or interfering. I can get them moving freely without grasping for their habitual responses and I can wean them off dependency on me or any teacher and get them self sustaining in their use and application very quickly.
Join me as I demonstrate and teach my protocols and unfurl the reasoning behind them. I will also teach NLP techniques you can use on yourself and some others for new teachers who would like to feel more confident in their teaching.
My article about my teaching methods for Alexander Technique International’s May edition of ExChange magazine has now been published on my AlexanderTechniquePlymouth.co.uk and LoosenUp.org websites.
