Alexander-Technique and Focal Dystonia

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder that is ten times more prevalent among musicians than in the general population.

Following an introductory theoretical section on dystonia and its presumed physiological basis, you will gain insight into how this translates into practical Alexander Technique procedures for re-training the functions of affected body parts. You will have the opportunity to try some of the procedures developed in collaboration with people affected by dystonia. Furthermore, we will examine the initial warning signs of dystonia in musicians and discuss strategies for preventing the onset of this debilitating condition.

The workshop will demonstrate how the principles of the Alexander Technique can effectively address the core issues associated with dystonia and how the self-efficacy gained through the Alexander work can make a crucial difference in managing the condition.
