Marjorie Barlow relates FM Alexander saying that the teacher’s hands should be so light that the pupil hardly knows that they are on him. While we do focus on how to put hands on our pupil, we seldom speak about how to let them come away.
Disengagement is a close relative to non-doing — it is a chance to become aware of not end-gaining by increasing effort while our hand is in contact. Can we allow our hand to become ever lighter while actively inviting a more receptive state until the hand happily floats away.
This is an area Alex has been thinking about recently. He likes to look into the thinking and experience of reducing effort and discovering the communicative power of what the hand can effect.
