Am I doing what I think I am doing? Am I a full partner with my instrument? When learning to play an instrument, we were typically taught to concentrate primarily on the instrument and the quality of the sound, with minimal guidance on how we use ourselves in relation to the instrument.
The use of oneself in the process of learning an instrument is often overshadowed by the technical and positional demands of the instrument itself. As children, we often contort our bodies into awkward positions to achieve the desired musical outcome. By applying the Alexander Technique, we can question the physical and mental habits ingrained in our bodies from years of practice.
This exploration can reveal surprising insights, as the Primary Control helps us become full partners with our instruments. It is fascinating to hear the difference in sound when we fully utilize the magnificent capabilities of our blossoming selves. Bring your musical pieces, whether instrumental or vocal, and let’s enjoy working on them together.
