Going Up

‘When I am teaching you as I do now, I am able to convey to you what I want to convey because as I touch you and guide you with my hands in carrying out my instructions, I myself am going up! up! up!’ (p 51 of The Expanding Self by Goddard Binkley (STAT Books 1993)).  This emphatic statement by FM in the course of giving a lesson makes Going Up sound like a rather dramatic event.   In reality, it is a subtle process yet essential to understanding the Alexander technique and to teaching it, as the above FM quote indicates.  The subtlety lies in the fact that you cannot directly ‘do’ it; what you can do is repeatedly set up the conditions within which it can happen.

In these classes we will explore through practical experiences just what that means, and why it is central to benefitting from the AT in your own life.
