Breathing is an involuntary activity, yet it can be disrupted by everyday stresses, dietary choices, excessive sitting and talking, and environmental factors. The Buteyko Method is a breathing technique designed to enhance functional breathing patterns. Functional breathing involves consistently breathing through the nose while resting, exercising, or sleeping. It emphasizes light, diaphragmatic, and slow breathing.
The Buteyko Method can serve as an effective self-management treatment for conditions such as asthma, rhinitis, hay fever, anxiety, high blood pressure, insomnia, snoring, sleep apnea, and long COVID, to name a few. It addresses both the biomechanics and biochemistry of breathing.
The session will primarily be practical. I will introduce some Buteyko exercises aimed at correcting harmful breathing patterns, such as mouth breathing, upper chest breathing, and fast, irregular breathing. I will also highlight the similarities with the Alexander Technique and explain how I integrate the two disciplines.
