Researchers have proposed that four primary energy patterns flow through the human nervous system. These patterns are hypothesized to comprise the primary neuromuscular connection between body and mind. Discovered in the 1930s by kinaesiologist, Josephine Rathbone, who was researching the ways people move and hold residual tension in their bodies, these energy patterns manifest in everything we think, say, or do. Understanding the characteristics and nature of kinaesthetic energy patterns will not only add an important dimension to our own self-understanding—it will help us read our students more accurately, work with them more effectively, and avoid pedagogical or relational missteps that can occur if we do not understand how kinaesthetic energy patterns are operating–not only in our students, but in ourselves as well.
In this workshop we will explore both the scientific and practical aspects of kinaesthetic energy patterns in a multi-faceted format that includes lecture, demonstration, discussion and practical application. Particular attention will be given to understanding and identifying the four patterns and incorporating this knowledge when teaching inhibition, end-gaining and direction.
