Gary Ward’s ‘Anatomy in Motion’ method: what can we learn as Alexander Technique teachers?

Gary Ward’s ‘Anatomy in Motion’ is a method which seeks ‘to re-educate the body in its movements and allow the body to reorganise itself and take the pressure of the system that is causing pain. We get the body to do the healing through movement.’

Gary writes, ‘When I work with the whole body, I have the intention of re-educating the system to work systematically, by enhancing the communication between all joints and enabling all muscles to operate in accordance with the joint system in a dynamic environment.’

He has ‘five big rules of motion’ as follows:
– Muscles lengthen before they contract
– Joints ACT, muscles REACT
– Everything orbits around centre
– Perceived centre dictates movement, posture, pain and potential
– Perfection is hardwired and pre-installed

Gary Ward is known for his book, What the Foot? and his creation of the Flow Motion Model and. In 2016 he took part in an episode of ‘Doctor In the House’ for the BBC, assisting Dr Rangan Chatterjee.

This workshop will explore some Anatomy in Motion principles which I think are most relevant to the Alexander Technique. It is for anyone who loves ideas which clarify, invigorate and indeed challenge. I find my own practice as an Alexander Technique teacher always deepens when I come into contact with something that seeks to solve similar problems but from a completely different starting point (Gary began his journey as a ski boot fitter in France).

The workshop will include ample time for discussion and debate. I have a long experience teaching the Alexander Technique to young people, so you can rest assured that the workshop will be accessible, inclusive, fun, practical, clear and memorable.
