“Each of us is in a field of energy that is not limited to the physical boundaries, but it expands beyond the physical boundaries of the body. I think what we have to do in Alexander now is make contact with this energy.”
— Judith Leibowitz
The Alexander Technique has been foundational in the actor training program at Juilliard since its inception. In 1968 Judith Leibowitz was invited by John Houseman to join the founding faculty of the new Drama Division. During her 23 years of teaching acting students, she explored the mind-body connection in terms of energy. “Energy follows thought” she would say.
Judy was fascinated by energy. She developed a series of exercises she called her energy games (I now call them the Basic Energy Work). Towards the end of her life, she experimented with taking the Alexander Technique into the realm of the imagination to help the students embody character.
In the years since her passing, I have had the honour and the privilege of developing her work further into what I call the Character Energy Work, often collaborating with acting teachers and directors. In this workshop, we will explore and experience how the Alexander Technique and the energy work can help actors embody the thoughts, circumstances, words, and desires of the characters they play.
